strands for trans: world’s first registry of trans-friendly salons and barbershops

Hair is a gendered space. Salons for women. Barbershops for men. And a growing number of trans people were being rejected and refused service from such places. So using the colors of the trans flag, we transformed the iconic barber pole into an inclusive symbol salon and barbershop owners can put in their windows to show all are welcome.

Then, we went global with the world’s first online registry of trans-friendly hair spaces on Google Maps. 7 years later, shops are still signing up, expanding past the US into Europe and Australia.
